Each year in the second week of September, NECTA administers the PSLE. THE TANZANIA NATIONAL EXAMINATIONS COUNCIL (NECTA) is a government institution created by Parliamentary Act No. 21 of 1973.

Tanzania’s National Examinations Council (NECTA) is in charge of administering all national exams. The purpose of PSLE is to assess learners’ skills and knowledge in various subjects at the primary school level; to assess learners’ understanding of basic skills and abilities in reading, writing, and arithmetic, as well as their ability to apply such skills in solving relevant problems in life; and to identify learners with the capacity to continue with secondary education or other training institutions.

02 ENGLISH LANGUAGE

1.0 INTRODUCTION
This revised format is based on the 2016 version of the English Language
Syllabus used in teaching standards III – VII with effect from 2017. The format
has been prepared to accommodate some improvements made in the syllabus,
specifically the competence-based assessment. Thus, the English Language
examination will assess the candidate’s competencies acquired from standard III
to VII.

 
2.0 GENERAL OBJECTIVES


The English Language examination aims to test the candidate’s ability to:
2.1 express him/herself appropriately in a given situation;
2.2 use basic skills in listening, reading, and writing in English;
2.3 use vocabulary through listening, reading, and writing;
2.4 apply correct English grammar; and
2.5 use the English Language in acquiring higher education and for personal
advancement.

 

3.0 GENERAL COMPETENCIES
The examination will measure the candidate’s competencies on how to:
3.1 Comprehend oral and written information;
3.2 communicate through writing; and
3.3 use vocabulary through listening, reading and writing.
4.0 EXAMINATION RUBRIC
The examination will consist of one (1) paper of 1:40 hours. The paper for
visually-impaired candidates will last for 1:55 hours. The paper will comprise
three sections A, B and C with a total of 45 questions. Candidates will be
required to answer all the questions, weighing 50 marks. Candidates will be
required to provide their answers for sections A and B by shading the letter of the
correct answer on the OMR forms using the HB pencil. However, for section C,

candidates will write their answers in the spaces provided on the other side of the
OMR form.
Section A will consist of 35 multiple-choice questions. Out of 35 questions, five
(5) will be from the passage/story read by the invigilator. A candidate will be
required to listen attentively to the passage and respond to the questions. Each
item will carry one (1) mark. This section will weigh a total of 35 marks.
Section B will consist of five (5) questions. The questions will be either on
arranging the jumbled sentences chronologically or completing the composition
by choosing the letter of the correct answer. Each question will carry one (1)
mark. The section will weigh a total of five (5) marks.
Section C will consist of a short passage/poem followed by five (5) short answer
questions. Each question will carry two (2) marks. The section will weigh 10
marks.

5.0 EXAMINATION CONTENT

The following competencies will be assessed:
5.1 Listening and comprehending information presented orally.
5.2 Developing and using vocabulary appropriately through listening, writing
and reading.
5.3 Communicating simple ideas through writing.
5.4 Reading and comprehending written information.

 

NB : The results of Standard Seven have not yet been officially released, but they will be released in November or December on the first dates
