After the partition of the Police and Prisons forces took place on August 25, 1931, Tanzania Prisons Service (TPS) was formally constituted. Prior to 1931, the Police Force performed prison responsibilities in accordance with the colonists' interpretation and goal, despite having the duty to defend the security and property of foreigners. When it first began, the Prisons Service was known as the Prison Department, and its operations continued the colonial tradition of torturing inmates and making them work hard regardless of whether it was in their best interests or the interests of the country. Tanzania, formally known as the United Republic of Tanzania (Jamhuri in Swahili),Tanzania, part of the African Great Lakes region, is a nation in East Africa. To the north, it shares a border with Uganda; to the northeast, with Kenya; to the east, with the Comoro Islands and the Indian Ocean; to the south, with Mozambique and Malawi; to the southwest, with Zambia; and to the west, with Rwanda, Burundi, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Northeastern Tanzania is home to Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa's highest summit.

In Tanzania, significant hominid fossils have been discovered, including Pliocene hominid remains that date back six million years. The earliest remnants of the genus Homo are located close to Lake Olduvai, and the genus Australopithecus ranged over Africa between 4 and 2 million years ago. Humanity migrated across the Old World after Homo erectus emerged 1.8 million years ago, and then the New World and Australia under the species Homo sapiens. Additionally, H. sapiens conquered and assimilated the earlier human species in Africa.

Prehistoric migrations into Tanzania later in the Stone and Bronze Age included Southern Cushitic speakers who moved south from modern-day Ethiopia; Eastern Cushitic people who moved into Tanzania from north of Lake Turkana between 2,000 and 4,000 years ago; and Southern Cushitic speakers who moved south from present-day Sudan.

Between 2,900 and 2,400 years ago, the Nilotes—including the Datoog—emerged from the present-day South Sudan–Ethiopia border region. [11]: page 18 These movements occurred around the same time the Mashariki Bantu from West Africa began to settle in the Lake Victoria and Lake Tanganyika regions. Between 2,300 and 1,700 years ago, they then moved across the rest of Tanzania.

When Germany established German East Africa in the late 19th century, German administration over mainland Tanzania officially began. After World War I, British control was implemented in its place. The Zanzibar Archipelago continued to fall under a separate colonial administration while the mainland was ruled as Tanganyika. The United Republic of Tanzania was created in 1964 as a result of the two countries' separate declarations of independence in 1961 and 1963.
